POOL MAINTENANCE TIPS

Simple Habits That Keep Your Pool in Peak Condition Year-Round in Houston, Bryan & College Station

A LITTLE CARE GOES A LONG WAY

Regular upkeep is what keeps a beautiful pool beautiful. Use this guide as a running checklist — organized by how often each task should happen — or let our maintenance team handle it for you with a seasonal service plan.

MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

Weekly Care

Skim & Brush ⌄
Skim leaves and debris off the surface, and brush the walls and floor a few times a week to prevent algae from taking hold, especially in warmer months.
Check Water Level ⌄
Keep the water level at the midpoint of the skimmer opening so your pump can draw water efficiently without running dry.
Empty Skimmer & Pump Baskets ⌄
Clean out skimmer and pump baskets weekly so debris doesn't restrict water flow and strain your equipment.

Monthly Care

Test & Balance Water Chemistry ⌄
Test pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels at least monthly (weekly in peak season) and adjust as needed to keep water clear and equipment protected.
Inspect Tile & Grout ⌄
Check tile lines and grout for buildup, cracking, or loose sections before small issues become bigger repairs.
Backwash or Clean the Filter ⌄
Depending on your filter type, backwash a sand or DE filter or rinse a cartridge filter monthly to keep filtration efficient.

Seasonal Care

Spring Start-Up ⌄
Reopen your pool for the season with a full chemical rebalance, equipment inspection, and thorough cleaning after winter dormancy.
Off-Season Care ⌄
Even in Houston's mild winters, keep the filtration system running on a shorter cycle and monitor chemistry so algae doesn't get a head start.
Pre-Storm Prep ⌄
Ahead of heavy storms, lower the water level slightly, secure loose deck furniture, and turn off electrical equipment if flooding is a risk.

Equipment Care

Pump & Motor Checks ⌄
Listen for unusual noise and check for leaks around your pump regularly; catching issues early is far less costly than a full replacement.
Heater Maintenance ⌄
Have your heater professionally inspected each year to keep it running efficiently and to catch wear before it fails.
Automation & Controls ⌄
If your pool has smart automation, periodically confirm your scheduled cycles, lighting, and heating settings still match how you actually use the pool.

Water Chemistry Basics

Sanitizer Levels ⌄
Keep chlorine or your chosen sanitizer within the recommended range to protect swimmers and prevent algae growth.
pH Balance ⌄
Aim for a pH between 7.4 and 7.6 — water outside this range can irritate skin and eyes and reduce sanitizer effectiveness.
Alkalinity ⌄
Total alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH. Keeping it in range makes your pH much easier to maintain.
